Can Red Wine Be Good for Your Hearing?

There’s no shortage of headlines about red wine and its health benefits. And, now you can add hearing to the list of ways red wine may benefit your well-being.

Red wine, in varying degrees of moderation, is thought to be a plus to your overall heart healthy routine. Due to the presence of antioxidants, red wine may help prevent coronary artery disease, the condition that most commonly leads to heart attacks. While it is fantastic that red wine may offer some healing properties to our heart health, the hearing experts at Hearing, Balance & Speech Center are here to unpack the relation of red wine to hearing.

Red Wine & How It Relates to Hearing

What in Red Wine Makes It Good for Hearing?

The answer in a word is Resveratrol. Resveratrol is found concentrated in the skins and seeds of red grapes and some berries, like blueberries, that are present in high amounts in red wine. Research shows that Resveratrol has a positive impact on joint pain, some aspects of aging, cancer and now, hearing.

How Does Resveratrol Help Hearing Health

A 2013 study investigated the effects of resveratrol on hearing, specifically if it could be helpful in preventing noise-induced hearing loss. The results showed that Resveratrol reduced hearing loss in 50% of the rats that were involved in the experiment in a high noise environment.

It was hypothesized that the anti-inflammatory properties in Resveratrol may have helped  preserve the delicate hair cells within the inner ear. The results are preliminary, but show promise for both people with age-related hearing loss or noise-induced hearing loss.

Tips for Protecting Hearing Loss

  • Check with your doctor before beginning. Everyone has a unique medical profile, and the best first step is to consult with a medical professional before introducing a regular regimen of consuming red wine for hearing loss.
  • Consume in moderation. While red wine brings some promising health benefits, there is a tipping point if not consumed in moderation. Alcohol can actually cause hearing problems if overdone, according to many studies.
  • Schedule regular check-ups. It’s imperative to follow your hearing appointments and follow the advice of your hearing professionals. This will help you see what your current situation, how things are progressing and how your red wine consumption might be helping.
